these songs of freedom
okay one statement on politics and i'm done. interactions tonight got me thinking.
why do christians feel like they have to be political lobbyists? make everyone else agree with them and their views and their ways of thinking? if you don't vote the way they vote, you're evil? since i don't feel like typing a whole lot i'll just distill this down a bit.
i'm tired of feeling guilty because i don't agree with the way 'christians' are 'supposed to vote'. it's all so arbitrary anyway. it's just an adjective and just as fuzzy of a term as 'democrat' or 'republican' anyway... or 'hippie' or 'geek' or 'businessman' or any other term that isn't all-encompassing but people try to make it anyway. i'm going to vote for who i want to vote for and then after tomorrow i'm going to go back to forgetting about politics. not what's going on around me - but the stupid name-calling, futile, divisive bickering that we call political discourse.
i didn't decide who i was going to vote for for president until a few days ago, and in the last 24 hours i've still gone back and forth. i probably won't have settled on a decision until i walk into PRE tomorrow to vote. why? because i don't trust any politicians. our world won't look any better or worse four years from now regardless of who's in office. wanna know why? because the president we have DOESN'T FIX THE BIG PROBLEM OF HUMANITY. granted the person in office will determine the administration, and that'll determine law and spending of money, etc. but it won't fix us as humans.
and for some reason a lot of people who consider themselves christians - or followers of Jesus - or whatever - think that by focusing on politics they'll 'do their part' for God. if they advocate one guy or another, they'll have chosen the right side. but we're all messed up and i don't honestly think one side or the other will have any real impact on the real problem. hey guess what? if you took the time you spent making phone calls for your candidate or putting up signs, and you went and made a homeless guy a sandwich... or you donated the money you gave to the whoever national committe, to an organization that's treating cancer... or whatever... maybe things would look different.
i love Jesus. i absolutely love how he refused to get political. i want to model my life like that - down to earth love and care for people that are around you, cutting past the religious leaders' BS and getting straight to the heart of their real motives. i love his kinda 'leave me out of this' attitude of "give to caesar what is caesar's and to god what is god's". i don't know, maybe it's unreasonable to imagine that kind of lifestyle nowadays. i'd like to think it's compatible. but the point is i just wanna be like he was, i want to care about what he cared about and live like he lived. i guess i should stop being so bitter and finger-pointing. although i'm not directing this commentary at any person, rather, an idea or a way of living. i don't want any of my friends to read this and think i'm talking about them because i'm not at all. more than anything i want to never argue about politics or who i'm voting for, i want to get my stupid frickin civic duty done and go back to trying to care about individuals and stuff.
i want to turn off comments for this post because i already know what people'll say. you have to pick a person to run the country because he'll impact individuals, justin. he'll help decide what american does and how it works, his decisions will affect innumerable lives. it does matter. well i know it does but i don't enjoy it. it's too hard to pick between two big sides like this because i feel like i'm judging them, making a value judgement on who is better, like i'm qualified to make that decision. i feel like i'm trying to say i'm better than one or the other. if i sat down and had some cheerwine and a sandwich with each of them and i got a vibe for which one i trusted more, then i could decide. but i can't do that so i have to go on my own research, watching how they've talked and acted and their records and their proposed administration's decisions. gah. it's all so dumb.
just don't even bother commenting on this, seriously, because i'm sick of arguing. no one is qualified to run this country. i know we have to pick of the available people, figure out who's best qualified, i don't think anyone fits the bill, period. Jesus would maybe but he'd probably camp out in the slums of DC and multiply pizza and feed all the homeless and cure people's diseases, and not pay attention to the government and then everything would go all chaotic. yeah. Jesus would rule as president. so would Jay-Z. or Garrison Keillor. or John Carmack. and like four of you know who that is so screw it.
you can sum this whole wreck of a post up in john reuben's song have no opinion?. totally nails it. go read the lyrics. then listen to it somewhere. then vote. for whoever.
