i guess thats the price for bartering naivety

exciting news of the day, a while back i mentioned that my number one fave band ever, craig's brother, got back together... now it looks like they have a deal with a record company and are releasing an EP next month. :)

also the original TMNT show from the late 80's/early 90's first season comes out on DVD tomorrow. i don't think i'll buy it but it'd still be cool to sit and watch em for a while.

talked w/mom a little while yesterday about the impact of violence in the media on kids. she didn't want adrian playing any rated-M games, and some of them are rightfully rated M and kids under 18 shouldn't have their hands on them. so in that sense it's what every parent should be doing, keeping an eye on what their kids are playing. i think it's funny that UT2K4 (which i got adrian for his birthday) is rated M. it's hard not to be subjective, especially when i don't even see the gore or anything anymore. it seems like most of the generation born in the last 20-30 years is highly desensitized to it all, and the previous generation (our parents) see it so clearly. i watch kill bill and riki-oh and barely notice the graphic stuff. it seems like such a sidebar, something that's so prevalent that it's only noticed when it's missed in stuff our generation does for entertainment. adrian's been playing quake/q2 and stuff like that since it came out. the blood and gore, etc doesn't really seem to be anything besides an element of the gameplay. and people play stuff like UT and the like for the competition aspect, for the fun of it, and not just to see people get blown up. anyway it's interesting what different generations see as graphic in the media and in entertainment, and how i think for most of our generation a lot of it doesn't even seem to register at all. and i'm actually relieved about that. that viewpoint can allow one to be more objective and see something (a movie, a song, a game) for what it is and not get distracted by anything like that. i can watch kill bill and say 'wow that's a great martial arts flick' and not get sidelined by the gore, because to me it's almost like getting stuck on the clothes an actor is wearing or the location a scene is shot at - it's part of the movie, but not necessarily part of the plot or the storyline.

and i'm glad my parents are watching what adrian's doing, too, cause that's what every parent should do - take an interest. know when to say 'that's too much'. i'll probably do the same thing w/my kids and be startled by 'the norm' for their generation.
