inside you is an enemy

i'm not one to hype up bono. he pulls off some cool stuff and his band makes some good music, but his arrogance-hiding-behind-humor-and-strained-humility gets on my nerves sometimes. he's good and bad, just like all of us. anyway, metafilter had a link to his recent commencement address to the university of pennsylvania. it's pretty good. it also fuels more of my cynicism. i hope our generation doesn't hear the world's cries for help so much that they begin to bounce off our minds like advertisements do. but i'm forced to admit that i don't think our world will succeed in saving Africa from AIDS, or in any of the other "causes", because the level of sacrifice required is far too much to ask of the average person. i would rather say i'm realistic than pessimistic about this, but i know that's not true. i'm far too pessimistic for my own good.

but we will either collapse upon ourselves as a disaster of a self-serving population, or we will see a miracle that only God could orchestrate that turns the world and our selfishness on its head. i hope for the latter, and my heart expects the former.

maybe gene roddenberry was right. maybe it'll take world war 3 to revolutionize things. i'd like to think that Jesus was right, that he overcame the world and eventually things will be the way they should be. though after writing this it's even clearer to me that i am the problem.
