i'm just a stone right after you're gone (monterey, day 2)
okay do these people EVER get sick of spanish tile?
monterey was pretty cool... i rolled in there about 2pm. ate lunch at the london bridge pub on fisherman's wharf, great little place, really tasty fish & chips. walked the pier, sat on the beach, drove over to the aquarium and cannery row, explored, hung out. it's both liberating and - incomplete? partial? - at the same time to explore a new place solo. i talk to myself a lot, i think, when i'm flying solo. i also get myself angry and way too intense about things. let me explain that.
first, there are lots of things in ohio that i take for granted. how good traffic REALLY is there. signs on exit ramps that say where food and gas and hotels are.
i'm in salinas right now after the hunt (tm) for a hotel. said hunt wasn't fun - it was way harder than i expected... the holiday inn in monterey was $199 (hahahahahhaha) so i jumped on 68 and headed west to salinas, a close small town.
oh. driving through santa cruz, i was pretty close to tracking down SCO and taking a picture. of the place burning down. :) i may head to the UC Santa Cruz campus on the way home and buy a banana slugs shirt.
sorry. anyway. i spent a while driving through Salinas in rush hour traffic trying to find a hotel, and there wasn't ANYTHING except run-down death traps. i ended up driving in circles for a while, telling myself to calm down and ignore the traffic... i eventually gave up and hit 101 north and found a comfort inn that was cheap and had broadband-in-room. oh and by broadband-in-room i mean inconsistent-connection-of-death. i have to disable and re-enable my ethernet port every five minutes because it just stops working. anyway. all was well after i found the hotel... and yes donny, i was near...
and let me tell you - those are tasty burgers. i wasn't in-n-out, i was in-n-wait-15-minutes-n-out. it was worse than steak & shake. but mighty tasty.
tomorrow, i think i'm gonna go down to carmel and explore, and head back up to take renee out to dinner and someplace nice in downtown SF.
yogen fruz!
