love in an empty world

(image stolen from diesel sweeties)

feeding the music elitist in me, here are my top five albums for 2007:

5. MC Frontalot - Secrets From The Future
4. Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero
3. Bad Religion - New Maps Of Hell
2. Anberlin - Cities
1. Rise Against - The Sufferer And The Witness

back in february i was floored by this album, and several months later i still love every second of it. every track jumps in a different way, and each is masterfully driven by tim's battle-cry vocals. i'm not sure i will ever get tired of this album, and that (for me) is an enormous testament in and of itself.

this list isn't a shock to anyone who knows me. i don't share much in common with the music journalists touting the shins, LCD soundsystem, and feist - i doubt anyone else ever would duplicate this list, not because the list (or my taste) is better/worse than anyone else's; on the contrary, stuff strikes different people so differently that everyone's list should be different from everyone else's. right? or is that hopelessly optimistic?

Here we go:

5. Bright Eyes - Cassadaga
4. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
3. Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like
a Virgin Losing a Child
2. Over the Rhine - The Trumpet Child
1. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky

Other notables: Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank; Kings of Leon - Because the Times; Iron and Wine - The Shepherd's Dog; Rilo Kiley - Under the Blacklight; Amy Winehouse - Back to Black; Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

I still really want to hear: Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga; Josh Ritter - The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter; Derek Webb - The Ringing Bell; Band of Horses - Cease to Begin; The National - Boxer

For what it's worth.

i did enjoy sky blue sky, neon bible, and manchester's disc quite a bit. i've heard a little of that rilo kiley disc too and liked it, i was wondering if it was worth picking up...

I'll make you a copy. It is more "poppy" than their prior stuff. Their first few albums have some amazing songs on them.

Year Zero ftw! You'll have to wait until this year's official, highly self-indulgent davie awards to see my full list.
