serenity was marvelous. i can see why non-firefly fans would consider it simply a funny, fast-paced scifi-action flick with some interesting characters. the characters really are the point of this show - you have to really care about them to garner the movie's full impact. what i love most though is that joss whedon takes risks. he isn't afraid to throw his characters' lives into a tornado...

i can see how critics could look at the movie and consider it a ho-hum sci-fi story that steals too much from the matrix or star wars. again, there aren't too many roads you can go down in a sci-fi action sequence that haven't been done. large space battles or a lone character in the middle of a room beating up dozens of enemies... i guess as long as a film isn't entirely comprised of borrowed scenes and plot it's acceptable to overlap.

beyond that - serenity and firefly are poignant statements about human nature, distilled down to a form that everyone can relate to, laugh with, and cry over.

they're showing them on the scifi channel on friday nights. check it out, seriously, you won't regret it.

so a method was developed to successfully downgrade the PSP's firmware to 1.5 - enabling it to run homebrew code (i.e. emulators and whatnot). i think i may take the plunge. i rarely use the PSP web browser (i'm rarely 2 feet from a PC is why)... i won't be able to play burnout without re-upgrading back to 2.0...

NLT starts tomorrow, as does the new book we're doing for vandelay called louder than words. the first chapter was really not much more than a motivational poster, and i hope the book goes a little deeper than a useless "10 steps to make yourself better through determination and yada yada" spiel. i think i've about had my fill of those...

man, have you ever listened to 311's evolver? i haven't paid much attention to them in the last years... but it's a really impressive piece of work. it's like they woke up for a few minutes and realized that a good producer would make their albums sound about 300% better.
